Press Conference of Alisa Maric and Silvio Danailov

Today after the start of the first round, Minister of Youth and Sport Ms. Alisa Maric, and President of the European Chess Union Mr. Silvio Danailov held a press conference, in the press center of the Championship. The host of the conference was Mr. Vladimir Sakotic, who welcomed the media representatives and all present, as well as the special guest from Russia, Mr. Evgeny Surov, editor of the website Chess-News.ru, one of the most popular chess portals in the world, and announced the guests.

Minister Maric greeted the audience, and expressed her satisfaction to be the host of such a prestigious competition, as a chess Grandmaster who has participated in the similar events until recently.

„Our country has already proved itself as a good host. Serbia cherishes the tradition of chess. We are proud that almost everyone knows or plays chess. The fact that 169 participants from 35 national federations will take part in this tournament, which is a record, is a big accomplishment for our country“ - said minister Maric.

She also expressed her special thanks to Mr Silvio Danailov, President of the European Chess Union, who entrusted the organisation of this tournament to our country, and I think this will be a great announcement of the future major chess events in Serbia.

Mr. Silvio Danailov, President of the European Chess Union thanked Minister Maric for her support, all the sponsors, and people who contributed to the organization.

„Belgrade and Serbia have long chess tradition and culture, and we are pleased that one of the most important tournaments in the ECU calendar is held here. During today's meeting with Serbian President Mr. Tomislav Nikolic, we remembered the time when one could every day read about chess in the newspapers. I hope those times will come back again, which is exactly what this championship can contribute“ - said Mr. Danailov.
